Clouds. Things being wrapped up. Strange stuffed fruit. Odd little things from nature. They all needed their portraits painted in the manner of errant creatures. Now the still-life objects were like the stuffed animals, zoomorphic and anthropomorphic. Animals become people, objects become creatures with a soul. I used these objects to tell stories, still-life as narrative, and inklings of my odd sense of humor, which began to appear in my painting early in this body of work; both stuffed animals and still-life objects alike.
I have a thing for the folds of fabric, and the play of light on drapery. Painting fabric well was something I had been trying to achieve since my days at SFAI. I collected silk and chiffon scarves from the same thrift stores.
