I took a few drawing classes at the Harwood Art Center during my second year in Albuquerque, and met other artists with similar interests. The bottom painting is one of two predecessors for this new body of work I was about to embark upon. The whole class painted her. Soon afterwards, I received private lessons in cast drawing from another student. I learned more about drawing here, than from either art school I went to.
Meanwhile, I had been collecting old stuffed rabbits for an installation project I never did. Being a solitary painter, I didn’t want a model, another human being, in my studio. So I sat a rabbit down, and then another, and then a few odd still-life objects, and the rest is history.
I could finally paint like my old masters. This was thrilling to me! Like learning how to fly with my very own wings.
